20 social houses

01Housing and planted public space

Twenty new social homes form part of a wider renewal of Alfred de Taeyestraat in Kaprijke. Together with the renovation of fourteen existing dwellings, the proposal rethinks the relationship between housing, parking and the street.

A greener street

Parking is consolidated in a shared surface-parking area, replacing the existing enclosed garages and allowing the new homes to be designed without private driveways. The buildings can then sit further back from the street, making room for three generous planted spaces. These green rooms give the neighbourhood a softer edge and, together with carefully placed road narrowings, turn a traffic-oriented street into a calmer place to live.

Three clusters, one neighbourhood

Each housing cluster responds to its setting. At the junction with Zuidstraat, the buildings frame a green entrance to the neighbourhood. The largest plot accommodates broad, shallow houses that leave more room for planting, while the third cluster sits behind the neighbouring street line to create a sheltered green space. The existing homes are renewed alongside this new construction, with insulated brick façades, more open living spaces and upgraded services. The proposal combines new housing and renovation within a continuous neighbourhood fabric.
