Walls and privacy
At first glance, the Chechen house presents a closed character to the street. High walls enclose the dwelling, with a steel gate forming its only connection to public space. This enclosure responds to the cultural importance of protecting family privacy.
The street as a meeting place
The street resembles an open-air hallway lined by large gates. The private character of each house shifts social contact towards the street, where residents meet neighbours and passers-by. Beside the steel gate, a homemade bench often provides a place to sit, talk and socialise in the evening.
